š± The whole arena laughed when the tiny boy challenged the undefeated giant⦠until the champion saw what was hanging around the childās neck and suddenly forgot how to breathe.
Nobody knew how the boy had gotten into the ring.
One moment, the crowd inside the massive Nova Crown Arena was roaring for the most dangerous wrestler in the country, and the next, a ten-year-old child in a blue-and-yellow jacket was standing barefoot-close to disaster under the white lights, staring up at a man who looked big enough to break the ring just by stepping wrong.
His name was Magnus Veyr.
The fans called him Iron Magnus, because in seven years, no one had pinned him, no one had forced him to quit, and no one had ever made him look afraid. He was a mountain of muscle, bald-headed, black-bearded, tattooed across one shoulder, with a smile that usually appeared right before another grown man hit the mat.
Across from him stood Niko Arden, a boy so small that the top rope was nearly level with his shoulders.
The referee, Luis Moreno, rushed forward with panic in his eyes.
āKid, you canāt be here,ā he said, trying to sound gentle while the cameras zoomed in. āWhere are your parents?ā
Niko did not answer him.
He only looked at Magnus.
For two seconds, even the crowd seemed unsure what to do.
Then Magnus threw his head back and laughed.
The sound rolled through the arena like thunder, and that was all the permission the audience needed. Thousands of people burst into laughter. Some pointed. Some filmed. Some shouted jokes from the front rows. A man near the barricade yelled that the boy had wandered in from a birthday party.
Magnus leaned forward, keeping his huge boots planted on the mat, and grinned down at him.
āDid you lose your mother, little man?ā he said, loud enough for the microphones to catch. āGo away before I step on you.ā
The arena exploded again. š
But Niko did not smile.
He did not run.
He did not even blink.
He simply lifted his chin and said, āNo. I want to fight.ā
That was when the laughter changed.
At first, people laughed even harder, because the sentence was absurd. A ten-year-old boy challenging the most feared wrestler alive sounded like something out of a prank video. But then the cameras pushed closer, and the huge screens above the ring showed Nikoās face.
There was no joke in his eyes.
There was only fear that had been locked behind something stronger.
Luis moved between them quickly, holding up both hands.
āAbsolutely not,ā he said. āThis is over. Security!ā
PART 2
Two guards started climbing onto the apron, but Niko suddenly reached into his jacket and pulled out a small silver chain.
At the end of it hung a scratched metal pendant shaped like a broken wing.
Magnus stopped smiling.
It happened so fast that people in the front row noticed before the commentators did. One second, the champion was mocking the boy. The next, every muscle in his face had gone still.
The guards froze.
Luis looked from the pendant to Magnus.
āMagnus?ā he asked quietly.
The giant did not answer.
His eyes were locked on the necklace as if it had reached out of the past and grabbed him by the throat.
Niko held it tighter.
āMy mother said you would recognize this,ā he said.
The arena became strangely quiet, which felt impossible with so many people inside it.
Magnus swallowed.
āWho gave that to you?ā he asked, and his voice was not loud anymore.
āMy father.ā
The championās jaw tightened.
āWhat was his name?ā
Niko took a breath that made his small shoulders rise and fall.
āEmil Arden.ā
A wave of confusion moved through the audience, because most people did not know the name, but the older fans did. A few men near ringside stopped recording. A woman in the second row covered her mouth. Somewhere behind the announcerās table, one of the producers whispered something into a headset.
Magnus stepped back.
Not forward.
Back.
For the first time in his career, the undefeated giant looked shaken.
Years earlier, before the bright lights and the championship belt, before the private jets and screaming crowds, Magnus Veyr had been nobody. He had been a broke fighter sleeping in gyms, eating cold leftovers, and trying to convince himself that pain meant progress.
Emil Arden had been the only man who believed in him.
Emil had trained him, protected him, and once took a beating meant for Magnus after a backstage argument with the wrong people. The injury ended Emilās career. Magnus became a star. Emil disappeared.
And now Emilās son was standing in the ring.
Wearing the pendant Magnus had given his friend the night he promised, with tears in his eyes, that he would never forget him.
Nikoās voice trembled, but he forced the words out.
āMy mom is sick,ā he said. āShe told me not to come, but I heard her crying because the hospital said they couldnāt wait anymore.ā
Nobody in the arena moved.
Niko looked up at the giant.
āShe said my dad once saved your life. She said if you were still the man he believed in, you would help us.ā
Magnus closed his eyes.
The cameras caught everything.
The laugh lines fading from his face. The sweat on his forehead. The way his huge hands slowly opened and closed like he did not know what to do with them.
Then Niko said the line that made the whole arena go cold.
āBut when I found you, they told me you refused to answer her letters.ā
Magnus opened his eyes.
The crowd gasped.
Luis turned toward him, stunned.
Magnus shook his head once, almost violently.
āI never got any letters.ā
Niko stared at him.
āMy mother sent twelve.ā
The champion looked toward the entrance ramp.
Far above the ring, in a private luxury box behind tinted glass, a man in a dark suit suddenly stood up.
Only one camera caught him.
Magnus saw him too.
His manager, Dorian Vale.
The same man who controlled his contracts, his public image, his money, and every message that reached him.
For the first time that night, Magnus was not looking at Niko.
He was looking at the man who had built an empire around him.
Dorian slowly lifted his phone to his ear.
Then every screen in the arena went black. ā ļø
The microphones cut out.
The lights above the ring flickered.
A security guard near the ramp touched his earpiece and started running toward the exit.
Niko looked up at Magnus, confused and scared.
āWhatās happening?ā
Magnus lowered himself to one knee in front of the boy, his huge body blocking him from the cameras, the crowd, and everyone moving in the shadows beyond the ring.
His voice came out low enough that only Niko and Luis could hear it.
āYour father didnāt send you here to fight me.ā
Niko whispered, āThen why?ā
Magnus looked toward the dark luxury box.
āBecause he knew I was the only one big enough to fight them.ā
And just then, the arena doors slammed shut. š³
