For a moment, the water churned with bubbles and scattered ice. Then only ripples remained.
Three people stood on the dock laughing, and none reached down.
That morning, Sofia had arrived at her husband Adrian’s family cabin, hoping their recent arguments were finally over.
His parents, Robert and Helen, had pressured her to guarantee a bank loan for the struggling property. Sofia refused because she and Adrian were saving for their own home, but they treated her decision as a betrayal.
At breakfast, Helen hugged her, and Robert apologized. Relieved, Sofia agreed when Adrian suggested a walk along the lake.

The detective played part of Helen’s recording. Sofia saw Adrian shove her, then heard the three of them laughing after she disappeared.
“Please stop,” she whispered.

Adrian began sending apologies, followed by excuses, then angry messages accusing Sofia of destroying his family. She saved them all and filed for divorce.
